Children at the Happy Home orphanage

The decade long conflict between the armed forces and Maoists took more than 13,000 thousand lives in the span of ten years. Many children became orphaned as their parents died in the crossfire or were killed by the army who accused them for supporting the Maoists, or vice versa. Similarly, diseases and natural disasters like landslides, floods and earthquakes has left many children parentless.

These children are supported by their relatives for some time but soon are forced into domestic labor at a time when they should be attending school. Some of these children flee the villages and head to the city looking for better opportunities only to end up living in the streets of Kathmandu. Happy Home rescues such children from the homes where they are serving as child laborers or from the streets where they are leading miserable lives and enrolls them into the orphanage where they enjoy the privileges of basic human needs.

There are 17 children currently living at the Happy Home orphanage and you can learn more about them on this page. You can learn more about the Happy Home orphanage project on the projects page.
