Street Children

The social structures of Nepali society leave many children very vulnerable. Conflict and poverty have rendered many children parentless and homeless and they end up finding the streets of Kathmandu a place of retreat. Among the children one finds in the street many are those who flee the hilly countryside where life is beyond imagination; starvation, domestic violence and chores too difficult to endure.

There are hundreds of such children who have succumbed to death or a life heavily involved with drugs. Those who do survive these outcomes become involved in illegal activities and become gangsters, thieves or social outcasts. Helping hands of charities working for the street children reach to very few of these socially disgraced children. Happy Home is one charity, which embraces these unfortunate children and promises them a better future.

Currently we are running two projects dedicated to the benefits of street children.

1. Dhapakhel Project
2. Dallu Project

1. Dhapakhel Project

The situations of street girls in Nepal are beyond one’s imagination. Once they become teenagers the local Maphia chase them to involve them in prostitution. Massage centers in and around the Thamel area and a number of local cabin restaurants take them in. There are few organizations who are willing to protect them from illegal activities. Happy Home is one of them working to protect and rescue these street children before they fall in the hands of these Maphia. The facility at Dhapakhel supports 15 girls who were spending miserable lives in the street.

We provide a safe and healthy environment for homeless street girls. The girls receive shelter, meals, clothing, healthcare and more importantly love and care. They attend nearby schools and all necessary expenses, fees and education materials are provided by Happy Home. We make every possible effort to offer them good facilities with whatever resource we can generate. Since we do not have any perennial supports from donors, we urge our well wishers for their kind support so that we can continue to rescue children off the streets and provide them a brighter future.

A brief profiles of each child at the Dhapakhel project are given below:

2. Dallu Project

In addition to the Dhapakhel facility for the street girls, to help eradicate the problems of street children, we are supporting 64 children who are living in absolute poverty. Most of the children belong to the schedule caste single mothers; either mothers never married but having children or divorced. The families have small rented homes but not proper ones. They do not have any job and a means of income so the families and children sometimes stay hungry. As they do not have money to send their children to schools, most of the kids do not go to school. This is where Happy Home steps in and support the most needy families. Happy Home is also working hard to find them minor jobs so that they can earn at least something to buy them two meals a day and pay the rent. At present, children are living on the groceries provided by the Happy Home and the wages earned by the mothers who work as laborers. We have named the small houses as “Street Children Protection and Rehabilitation Centre” and planning to develop it as place having all the basic facilities for the children.

The “Street Children Protection and Rehabilitation Centre” is a non-governmental project exclusively working for the benefit of these children and will kick off immediately after the availability of funds.

In addition to this, the project will carry out other activities such as counseling the street children and running medical mobile checkups. The project also works towards reducing the number of street children in and around the Kathmandu valley. This is done by organizing awareness campaigns and working jointly with other pressure groups to lobby with the government, to ensure higher priority for the children.
